Travel diaries: NC Mountains (again)

Four days in Western NC, complete with hiking, beer and views forever.

We just spent a few days in the mountains relaxing and exploring to our hearts content.

The weather was kind of gross (so much rain) but we made the best of it, doing activities in the breaks and driving all over the place to find indoor activities.

Our house was in Bakersville, which was a new-to-us town but we stayed in nearby Burnsville last fall. This trip, it was just the 3 of us and no real agenda other than find a place to hike.

We ended up at Linville Falls. We came prepared with our rain jackets and ended up having a great time. L declared this is favorite part of the trip.

We found salamanders on the way out and got to hold a couple. This big one had no problem being handled.

Afterwards, we drove to Blowing Rock for lunch and beer. The weather ended up clearing up while we were eating so afterwards we were able to walk around the shops and downtown.

And we got to play on the really awesome playground before having some Kilwin’s and then heading home.

The next day was even more rainy (if that’s possible) and left us with few outdoor options. We found a cool spot in Burnsville for lunch — and beer.

And then we went in search of another indoor or at least, dry, activity and decided on gem mining!

It was a blast and we found tons of cool rocks. Fun fact: Spruce Pine is where our sweet Bud was rescued from years ago.

It miraculously dried out enough for a fire and we had a good time listening to music and hanging out outside before the thunder roared again.

We really enjoyed our time in Bakersville and highly recommend if you’re looking for something secluded. It was about a 45 minute drive to most things and there are no delivery options available.

It was a great few days and relaxing for the most part (there was A LOT of driving) but we were each able to finish a couple books and all agreed it was a wonderful trip.
